# AI search news this week, so far

1. Rank trackers are getting wrong Google results Nozzle checked 27.5 million Google results pages: since 13 September, 8% of the pages rank trackers got back were wrong, against 0.17% before, with the tracked site missing from the top 10 and Reddit and Facebook filling the gap. 78% were back to normal within 3 days. Google hasn't commented; check Search Console before reporting a drop. Source:Nozzle, Poisoned Google SERPs (10 Oct 2026); Search Engine Roundtable (12 Oct 2026), 10 Oct 2026
2. Google now shows an AI Overview on most brand searches DemandSphere's tracking had AI Overviews on 26% of branded searches on 1 September and about 80 to 90% by late September. The summary pulls from Reddit, reviews and forums, and some list why people avoid a brand. Google hasn't announced the change, and the click impact isn't measured yet. 3. Top SEOs predict a big Google update Lily Ray, Marie Haynes and Glenn Gabe predict a big Google update soon. The signs: Google rewrote its AI content guidance on 1 Oct ('It is critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content'), Google's Gary Illyes said scaled content is becoming more of a problem than link spam, and there have been 4 spam updates in 2026. It's a prediction, not an announced update. Source:Lily Ray (5 Oct 2026); Google Search Central, Using generative AI content (1 Oct 2026), 5 Oct 2026
4. ChatGPT clicks now show up as direct traffic Since GPT-6, ChatGPT links no longer carry utm_source=chatgpt.com or a referrer, so analytics files the visits as direct. Adobe's Cedric Huesler saw ChatGPT visits fall about 31k a day while direct rose about 26k a day on the same ~500 pages (9-13 Oct). Our own test on 15 Oct found the same: every link in a ChatGPT answer went straight to the site with no tag. OpenAI hasn't commented. 5. Google AI Mode is forecast to pass ChatGPT by 2027 eMarketer forecasts Google AI Mode will have more US users than any other AI tool by 2027: 41.5% of US internet users, up from 9.7% in 2025, passing ChatGPT, and 50.1% by 2030. It's a forecast, counting anyone who prompts it at least once a month. Source:EMARKETER, AI Consumer Adoption Forecast H2 2026 (forecast Aug 2026), 15 Oct 2026
6. Google built a fast lane for forum posts Google's new UGC Fresh Data Program lets approved forum and social sites send new posts to Google, ideally within minutes, then keep sending likes and replies for 72 hours. It's separate from normal crawling, no platforms are named, and Google says it doesn't guarantee anything appears in Search. 7. Claude just banned seeding AI answers Anthropic's new Usage Policy bans using Claude to manipulate the sources AI systems draw answers from, like networks of sites posing as independent sources that back the same claims. Fake reviews, hidden sponsorship, spam and getting around other sites' rules are on the list too, and you're responsible for what your AI agents do. In force from 12 November 2026. Source:Anthropic, 2026 Usage Policy update (8 Oct 2026) and the Usage Policy, effective 12 Nov 2026, 8 Oct 2026
8. SEOs are seeing a spike in Google penalties Marie Haynes, who fixes Google penalties for clients, went from almost no requests to several a week, mostly thin content, pure spam and scaled content. Google hasn't confirmed a rise. The same week, Google finished its September spam update (24 Sep to 8 Oct). Check yours in Search Console under Security & Manual Actions, then Manual actions.
