HTTPS
The secure version of HTTP that encrypts data between the browser and server using TLS/SSL. Google has confirmed HTTPS as a ranking signal since 2014.
Why HTTPS Matters for SEO
HTTPS is a baseline expectation for any website. Chrome flags non-HTTPS sites as "Not Secure," which destroys trust. It's a lightweight ranking signal, but more importantly, not having it actively hurts you. There's no reason to run HTTP in 2026.
How HTTPS Works
Your server uses an SSL/TLS certificate to establish an encrypted connection with the visitor's browser. This prevents data interception during transit. After migration, you need to 301 redirect all HTTP URLs to their HTTPS equivalents and update internal links, canonicals, and sitemaps.
Common Mistakes
- Migrating to HTTPS without redirecting all HTTP URLs properly
- Having mixed content (HTTP resources loaded on HTTPS pages)
- Letting your SSL certificate expire without auto-renewal
