Log File Analysis
The process of examining server log files to understand how search engine bots actually crawl your website. Log files record every request made to your server, including which URLs bots hit, when, and what status codes they received.
Why Log File Analysis Matters for SEO
GSC and third-party crawlers show you what could be crawled. Log files show you what actually was crawled. It's the only way to see real Googlebot behaviour, including which pages get crawled frequently, which get ignored, and where crawl budget is being wasted.
How Log File Analysis Works
Your server generates log files for every request. You filter these for search engine bot user-agents (Googlebot, Bingbot, etc.) and analyse crawl patterns. Tools like Screaming Frog Log Analyzer or custom scripts help you identify crawl frequency, status code distribution, and orphan pages.
Common Mistakes
- Never looking at log files and relying entirely on GSC crawl stats
- Not filtering out fake Googlebot requests that pollute the data
- Analysing too short a time period to see meaningful crawl patterns
