Search Intent
The underlying purpose behind a search query. It's what the user actually wants to achieve when they type something into Google. The four main types are informational, navigational, transactional, and commercial investigation.
Why Search Intent Matters for SEO
If your content doesn't match the intent behind the query, you won't rank. Full stop. Google is incredibly good at understanding intent, and it shows results that match what users actually want. A product page won't rank for an informational query no matter how optimised it is.
How Search Intent Works
Analyse the current SERP for your target keyword to understand what Google thinks the intent is. Look at the content types, formats, and angles that rank. Then create content that matches that intent better than what's currently there.
Common Mistakes
- Trying to rank a sales page for an informational query
- Not checking the SERP before deciding what type of content to create
