Faceted Navigation
A filtering system on e-commerce and listing sites that lets users refine results by attributes like size, colour, price, or brand. Each filter combination typically generates a unique URL.
Why Faceted Navigation Matters for SEO
Faceted navigation is a crawl budget nightmare if left unchecked. A site with 10 filters and 5 values each can generate millions of URL combinations, most of which are thin or duplicate content. Controlling which facets get crawled and indexed is one of the biggest technical SEO challenges in e-commerce.
How Faceted Navigation Works
Users click filters that append parameters to the URL or change the path. Each combination shows a filtered subset of products. The SEO approach is to decide which facets create indexable value (like brand + category) and block the rest via robots.txt, noindex, or canonical tags to the unfiltered page.
Common Mistakes
- Leaving all faceted URLs crawlable, creating millions of thin pages
- Blocking useful facet combinations that could rank for long-tail searches
- Using JavaScript filters that don't create crawlable URLs for valuable combinations
